The 14th annual “Spring on Fourth! What’s on Third? festival runs from 11:30 am to 4 pm. along 3rd & 4th streets in Bethlehem on Saturday April 25, 2009.

Free music, crafts, children’s activities, gallery browsing, food & chili-tasting contest. The chili contest runs from Noon to 2 pm. Performances by Jamani Drummers & Steve Brosky & Jimmy Meyer, BMX biking & skateboard demonstrations by Homebase.

General Motors Corporation is planning to temporarily close most of its U.S. factories for up to 9 weeks during the summer. Thousands of auto workers could be laid off but still get most of their pay because the United Auto Workers union contract requires the company to make up much of the difference between state unemployment benefits and their wages.


The Pennsylvania State House of Representatives has defeated a state wide bill to force drivers to put down their cell phones while driving. The Vote was 100-95 against an amendment that would require drivers to replace hand-held cell phones with hands free devices.

Statistics for 2008 listed 1,049 accidents involving hand-held phones and just 50 accidents involving hands-free phones. A recent poll by Quinnipiac University found that more than 8 in 10 Pennsylvanians support a ban on hand-held cell phones.

Once again our elected officials are not interested in doing the will of the people of Pennsylvania.


The Airport Center Mall in Allentown is slowly bringing more stores online. This week the Golf Galaxy opened with crowds waiting at the doors. The Mall is actually located on Airport road near Route 22 in Hanover Township, Lehigh County. The mall is about 500,000 square feet. The anchor stores for the mall will be Target and Sam’s Club.
The Christmas Tree Shop has already opened in the Mall.

AirTran is a discount carrier based in Orlando, Fla. It will begin nonstop flights between Lehigh Valley International Airport and both Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. starting June 25, 2009. AirTran is the eighth airline to operate at LVIA and will give the airport nonstop service to 13 cities.

The airline will offer four flights per week to Orlando with an introductory rate of $79 each way and three to Fort Lauderdale with opening rates of $84 each way. AirTran joins Allegiant Air and DirectAir in flying to Florida from Lehigh Valley International Airport.

In 2008, passenger traffic from LVIA dropped 8 percent, leading to the lowest number of fliers in at least a decade.
Traffic at LVIA peaked in 2004 with more than 1 million passengers. A recent study of local passenger traffic showed that as many as 400 passengers per day are using Newark and Philadelphia Airports to travel to Florida.


Bethlehem city police will return to mounted horse patrols. 1st time since 1940’s they’ll patrol parks, festivals & downtown on horse patrols. The city plans to buy 2 horses for officers. The horses will be housed in the historic Burnside Plantation. The last time the city had a mounted unit was 1941. Police on horseback have been a big hit in recent years during Musikfest.
